There was a remarkable programme on BBC Radio 2 today where two big characters from Britain’s recent political past shared their grief at losing their wives of over 50 years.
It was incredibly moving to hear the nation’s greatest socialist institution, Tony Benn, and the biggest pair of eyebrows the Labour movement has ever seen (Lord Dennis Healey), talking with such openness with other older male listeners who shared their experiences of loss with these two elder Statesmen live on air.
This was great reality radio, like having a unique window on a celebrity old man’s support group. It is so very rare to hear older men sharing their feelings in this public way and it was both dignified and deeply moving.
Let us all create more spaces in our lives where men of all ages and backgrounds are invited to share their experiences in this way. If you have time to listen, you can click to hear Tony Benn And Lord Dennis Healey sharing their grief.
